Alva Gregory ''Greg'' Nichols, II

Alva Gregory ''Greg'' Nichols, II, 71, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 18, 2012, surrounded by his family after a valiant battle with brain cancer.

Greg was born on October 26, 1940 in Huntington, WV. He was the son of the late Alva Gregory Nichols and Arcie Staton Nichols. Mr. Nichols was an active member of Rosemary Baptist Church and president of the Bob Britton Sunday school class. After graduating from King George High School in King George, VA, class of ’58, he served his country in the U. S. Navy. He then received a two-year degree in Electronic Engineering from VPI in Richmond, VA. He retired from Dominion Power after 30 years of service. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an avid golfer during his 18 years of retirement.

Greg was the loving husband of Cynthia ''Cindy'' P. Nichols, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage; three daughters, Anita Nichols Terry of Las Vegas, Barbara Nichols Moore and her husband, Neal, and Christina Nichols Garner, all of Roanoke Rapids; he was Papa to his six grandchildren, Cassandra Lynn Garner, Atalee Nichols Moore, Mara Jessica Terry, Emily Ann Moore, Christopher Steve Garner, and John Gregory Terry; his brother, Michael Staton Nichols and his wife, Chris, of Monroe, NC; a sister-in-law, Sherry Purks, of Las Cruces, NM; a brother-in-law, Carroll Wayne Purks, and his wife, Betty, of Rappahannock Academy, VA; and two sons-in-law, John Terry and Steve Garner.

Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends Friday, September 21, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 22, at 2:00 p.m. at Rosemary Baptist Church with Dr. Layne Wallace officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
